Duterte calls for government buyout of Palawan electricity distribution

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 4) – President Rodrigo Duterte said on Thursday he would order a government takeover of power distribution in Palawan amid reported energy problems in the island province.

Duterte called a certain electric operator during his speech at an event of the National Task Force and the Regional Task Force to End the Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-RTF ELCAC) in Puerto Princesa, recalling how he had ” confronted “the company three years ago because of the energy situation of the locality.

Walang nangyari (nothing happened), so I’ll chat with [Energy] Secretary [Alfonso] Cusi. We will take over and I-distribute name (we will distribute), “Duterte said.” You can’t claim exclusivity, you can’t claim a private interest because itong ilaw (that light) is impressed with the public good. “

“They wrote me a letter promising an action that will be improved,” he said. “So kunin ko na lang (I’ll just take it). It is not a right, it is not a privilege. It is something that is granted to you and the government can take it at any time. “

Duterte added that he would issue an expropriation order by “next week”.

The general manager did not name the operator concerned. But in 2018, he warned the Palawan Electric Cooperative (PALECO) that the national government could be forced to resume its facilities if power cuts persist.

CNN Philippines has contacted Cusi for more details on this.
