CINCINNATI – Following the company’s continued investments to improve southwest Ohio’s electrical infrastructure and increase value for customers, Duke Energy Ohio today asked its state regulator, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to conduct a public review of the company’s electricity distribution rates and approve a rate adjustment.

Overall, the proposed adjustment represents an increase of approximately $ 55 million. If approved by the commission, average customer invoices would remain below the national average. The monthly electricity bill for a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours per month would increase by 3.86%, or less than 15 cents per day. Non-residential customers will also see impacts on the bill to varying degrees.

Increase reliability and provide more control, convenience and choice

Many of Duke Energy Ohio’s investments have focused on continuously building a self-optimizing, intelligent grid that automatically isolates problems and reroutes electricity to reduce the frequency and duration of power outages.

In addition, the company has installed advanced smart meters that allow customers to access more bill reduction tools; display detailed information about their energy consumption; easily sign up to receive usage alerts, outage notifications and personalized billing options; and more.

New customer benefits offered

In today’s filing, Duke Energy Ohio is presenting various proposals to provide customers with more value, choice and convenience in their electrical service. These include:

  • Created a no-charge payment option for residential customers who want to pay their monthly utility bills with credit cards, debit cards or electronic checks. Currently, these customers must pay a fee of $ 1.50 at the time of transaction to use any of these payment methods. These fees are administered by a third-party payment processor.
  • Introducing a dynamic, improved, and easier-to-use hour-of-use pricing option that gives residential customers more opportunities to control their energy use and costs through the use of technology popular and emerging ones such as internet connected thermostats and electric vehicles. Simple behavioral changes, such as using dishwashing and laundry appliances only at night or on weekends, can also help lower bills due to the new plan’s shorter peak and discount periods.
  • Continue to make annual investments in the local electricity distribution system to enable other network improvement and modernization projects. Recent projects have increased the levels of safety, reliability and resiliency of Duke Energy Ohio’s system, resulting in, among other benefits, fewer and shorter customer outages. Ongoing and future plans include additional efforts designed to reduce the frequency and duration of blackouts and improvements that lay the foundation for the two-way energy flows needed to support emerging technologies such as rooftop solar power. , battery storage, electric vehicles and micro-grids.

Duke Energy Ohio, on file with its state regulator, is also proposing several changes to its lighting tariffs to allow for transitions and upgrades to more efficient appliances.

Helping customers in need
