Chinese premier insists on ensuring agricultural production, energy supply


On Wednesday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang called for efforts to stabilize agricultural production in the spring and ensure a bumper harvest and the supply of important agricultural products.

Chairing an executive meeting of the State Council, Li also stressed securing and increasing energy supply to better safeguard economic and social development.

The meeting noted that all localities should strictly fulfill their food safety responsibilities, coordinating COVID-19 epidemic control with agricultural production.

Meanwhile, “green channels” should be opened for the smooth transportation of fresh agricultural products like vegetables, while funds to help grain production should be released to farmers as soon as possible, according to the meeting.

On securing energy supply, the meeting called for efforts to fully play coal as the main energy source and intensify coal production, with additional coal production capacity of 300 million tons. to add this year.

The country will also encourage the clean and efficient use of coal and strengthen the construction of storage facilities, he added.

The low-carbon transformation of coal-fired power plants should be advanced to improve energy efficiency while ensuring electricity supply, according to the meeting.

The meeting also called for developing nuclear power in an orderly manner based on strict control, and approval was granted for three new nuclear units.
